No Kings, Overseas
Last weekend, swarms of people took to the streets in a powerful show of resistance against Donald Trump’s illegal, immoral, and reckless policies. As part of the latest #NoTyrants marches, Democrats across the globe made it loud and clear that we reject this administration’s abuses of power and executive overreach.
Estimates are now suggesting that over 8 million people participated in the marches, with over 3,200 events taking place in the United States alone, and hundreds more organized internationally. Demonstrations took place in cities including Paris, Madrid, Tokyo, Amsterdam, Brussels, Toronto, Barcelona, London, Nairobi, Sydney, San Juan and Oaxaca, to name a few. A photo showing a small group of demonstrators from Deception Island in Antarctica also went viral on social media, meaning that last weekend’s demonstrations reached all seven continents!
One protester in Paris captured the mood, explaining that she showed up because she wants people to understand that ‘we care, as Democrats Abroad, about what is happening in the United States, and we want to speak up and let people know that we will not back down, and we will not ever forget’.
Americans living abroad made it clear that they reject Trump’s feckless policies. Protesters cited a range of reasons for showing up, including Trump’s illegal war, the rising cost of living, the Epstein Files, immigration enforcement and ICE, and the ongoing erosion of democracy in the United States.
Americans abroad occupy a unique position. Not only can we protest in the countries where we live, but as U.S. citizens we retain our right to vote in the United States. It is important to remember that voting is the one of the most powerful forms of protest, and we are urging those who haven’t yet registered to go to votefromabroad.org and make sure that their voices are heard. The upcoming midterms are critical, and we have a real chance to make a change. It is becoming increasingly clear that Trump is feeling the pressure too, evident in his attempts to restrict mail-in voting, and initiatives such as the SAVE America Act.
We cannot be intimidated. The bottom line is all U.S. citizens living abroad have the right to vote, and despite Trump’s attempts to undermine that right, we will continue to exercise it. Together we can make a difference and defend our democracy.
